They started the year with a bang, now South Korean duo Lee Yong Dae-Jung Jae Sung plan to end the year on a memorable note. Having won the Korean Open in the beginning of the year, things seem to be going their way as the 2010 season comes to an end.
On Sunday, the duo bagged the Li Ning China Open Super Series 2010 men's doubles title, a clear indication that they are also capable of dominating the YONEX Sunrise Hong Kong Open scheduled Dec 7-12.
The South Korean combination demolished Chai Biao-Zhang Nan 21-15, 21-12 in the final to become the first non-Chinese players to record three China Open titles in a row. Yong Dae also matched another record as Sunday’s victory meant he equalled Gao Ling’s feat of winning of five China Open titles – three men’s doubles and two from the mixed doubles with Lee Hyo Jung.
Sunday’s victory didn’t come easy as the young Chinese pair put up a good fight before succumbing to the mighty Koreans.
Earlier, China’s Cheng Shu-Zhao Yunlei, the second seeds, were awarded a walkover by teammates Ma Jin-Zhong Qianxin in the women’s doubles.
That set the stage for the mixed doubles final, once again featuring two pairs from China – Zhang Nan-Zhao Yunlei and the unseeded pairing of Tao Jiaming-Tian Qing.
Tao Jiaming-Tian Qing went on the attack from the start of the match but made too many mistakes early on and this kept the scores tight. However, after sharing the lead several times, they eventually registered a 21-18 victory.
The second game was just as tight. The pairs once again exchanged points from the start and there was never more than a three-point gap. The pairs were deadlocked at 15-15 whne Tao Jiaming-Tian Qing turned up the pressure to win six of the next eight points to end the match 21-17 to become the only non-seeded winners of the 2010 China Open.
