Jay tells fans that he’ll be a singer they can be proud

Singer Park Jaebum’s new mini album ‘TAKE A DEEPER LOOK’ was officially released.

While being opened through on/offline markets on the 27th, the full music video of his title track ‘Abandoned’ was also unveiled.

Also, he added on an explanation of his title track with, “My title track Abandoned starts kind of softly, but it’s a song you can feel the twist of the atmosphere in at the chorus part, expressing the sorrowful and hurt feeling received after being abandoned by a woman.”

About his comeback in a long time and his mindset, he impressed, “I feel really good because it’s the first set of activities I’ve had in a long time. The feeling is reinforced because it’s an album I wrote the lyrics to myself, and also produced the melody to with my friends. More than anything, I’m really happy that I can stand in front of you guys with the music I like. I put my everything into this album. I really tried hard to make fans feel proud of me. Park Jaebum has stepped up to be the album’s overall producer, as well as writing all lyrics to the songs and participating in the composition of all songs, except one, showing without regret his matured ‘musician’ side, and will be taking his first major steps towards his soloist future with ‘TAKE A DEEPER LOOK’.

I met the beastly idols..

Someone called my name suddenly, at the foreign airport.
This is what happened in Seoul last month.
That person who called my name was Taecyeon from 2PM, a male singer group just getting popular in Japan these days.

He was with Chansung.
Wow, we met only one time on a TV program, and he found me in that huge airport.
It was really an inspiring coincidence.
In fact, I was holding 2PM’s CDs and magazines in my hand.
What I was holding had nothing to do with my job.
I just bought them by myself.
I fell in love with their wonderful performance at first glance when I saw them on Hey Hey Hey.
Their music and performance was really new to me when I first saw them.
It was an exciting first meeting.
Although I have many favorite idols from Japan, America and UK, 2PM is a group of good young men even though they are called beastly idols.
They are so fresh in any case.
Later, Junho noticed me and came over.
I now have a same feeling that I had a long time ago, when I used to buy Myojo and Heibon magazines.
I started buying Korean idol’s magazines…LOL
I think I will collect the scraps…
They are going to debut next month in Japan.
It is a matter of time when they will become very popular in Japan.
I enjoy myself with their Korean first concert DVD.
They looked fresher!!

A miracle with beasts at the airport

Did you enjoy watching Hey Hey Hey?

This picture is a miracle shot with 2PM, I wrote about this story on April 7th’s update.

Their Japan debut single, Take Off will be released on 18th May, and I met them for the first time in Hey Hey Hey which aired today.

After that, I went to Korea for work, and I was walking in the airport alone before I come back to Japan,

- 2PM are popular as beastly idols not only in Korea, but in other Asian countries. Are they beastly in real-life as well?

Taecyeon: When Junho is very concentrated while dancing, singing or composing, he’s like a real beast on a hunt. Haha.
Junho: When I play games too. Right now the game called “Civilization” is popular among the members. It’s a really good stress reliever! In case of Taecyeonie-hyung, he’s responsible for beastly visuals. He’s very charismatic. And also very beastly when he eats. Haha.
Taecyeon: Because I eat a lot and fast!
Chansung: I’m beastly when I’m exercising.
Wooyoung: As for me, it’s when I’m rehearsing hip-hop dance alone in front of the mirror.
Nichkhun: I might have a cute image in the eyes of the fans, but… surprisingly I have a very manly side too! Really. (laughs)
Junsu: By default, all of the members become beasts when they do something they like or when they are on stage. But other than that, especially in privacy we are very delicate. Like rabbits. (laughs)


- Up till now all 6 members of 2PM have been living together. We’ve heard you have moved to another house recently?

Wooyoung: I finally have a room of my own which I have craved for so much.
Nichkhun: It’s a two-storey house.
Junho: However, Taecyeonie-hyung has been so busy filming for “Dream High”, he hasn’t settled down in his room yet.
Junsu: Chansung is a bit weird. Because when he said that he’s ok with sleeping in the living-room, it got us worried – he’s simply erected a wall in the middle of the living room, making it into a room for himself! As a result, he’s now a member with the biggest room (laugh).
Taecyeon: But isn’t that cool?
Junsu: He’s smart!
Chansung: But since we’ve left for Japan before the clean-up, there are still cardboards lying around (laughs).
Junsu: The best part about having a room for yourself, is that you can hang your clothes freely around the room.
Wooyoung: Right now I’m really absorbed into what we should do with the interior. I want to make it look good and easy to use.
Taecyeon: I’m fine with any place as long as I can sleep and eat well.

- On top of that, a full-scale debut in Japan! Do you have anything to promise us about the future?

Nichkhun: First, we need to master the Japanese language.
Junho: I promise to build a beast-like body.
Nichkhun: Apart from the beastly appearance, I’d like show a different side of us as well.
Taecyeon: I want to meet Japanese fans on a huge stage. Somewhere like Tokyo Dome!
Junho: Also (lowers down his head) reaching No. 1… on Oricon charts…
Taecyeon: We do want that!

Taecyeon: Junsu has a really beautiful voice.
Junsu: Taecyeon is very manly. He’s good at rapping at acting. He’s very cheerful and always brightens up the atmosphere. However, aren’t you a bit tired lately? He wishes to have more sleep!
Taecyeon: (laughs out loud) Junsu probably also has a comedian talent. He started to show that side of his on TV as well recently. I wonder if the acute fans noticed that?
Junsu: Huhuhu (laughs). Taecyeon is a real beast on stage, but normally he’s very cute and laughs so much, it would be easy to label him as the maknae of the team. It’s surprising.
Taecyeon: When we used to share a room together, watching Junsu compose before going to sleep had been my habit.
Junsu: But now we live in different rooms, kkk. It’s a bit lonely!

Wooyoung: Khun-hyung never points out the faults in other people. He’s very considerate of the members and the staff, because he has great manners. For example, if there's some kind of make-up failure, he lends his help without saying a word, and things like that…
Nichkhun: (claps in silence)
Wooyoung: I also like it that he goes to sleep early. He’s easy to be with.
Nichkhun: Wooyoung is a very considerate dongsaeng. Since I’m the type to go to sleep and wake up early, he makes sure that it’s not noisy at home. I also like it that he uses shower neatly (laughs).
Wooyoung: Now it’s kind of hard, because we’re busy, but we used to go shopping together.
Nichkhun: We used to eat out together, and go to bookstores… now I want to embark on a journey one day with all of the members together! Somewhere to the seaside!
Wooyoung: I want to go skiing. In winter!

Chansung: What kind of person is Junsu Junho? Umm… It’s hard.
Junho: Hurry uuuup (laughs)
Chansung: Since he’s very smart, he’s the type of a person to think thoroughly about anything. I respect him, because he has a great power of determination. (steals a glance at Junho)… And his weakness…
Junho: You can say it, it’s ok lol
Chansung: Really? We’re always like that together (laughs). If I had to pick one weakness, I guess he has an impatient nature?
Junho: That’s true. I also think like that (laughs out loud). Chansung has nothing to fix! I could only think of a whole bunch of good points (laughs). The way I see it, he loves 2PM a lot, and always thinks about the group. He’s also very sensitive. A friend one can trust. And also very manly!

It’s been set that their Japanese debut will be on 18th of May. We will investigate the boys deeper starting from this issue, starting with Taecyeon and Nichkhun! Check out the member’s impression of those boys as well!

[I am such a cheery person in private, but not at work. Look closer at the difference! ]
---- What does it mean for you to be a member of 2PM?
T: There’s nothing more special than this. I think it will continue as long as I work hard on everything, so I try to work hard all the time as a member of 2PM.

---- Singing, dancing, rapping, which one do you like the most?
T: I’d say that I love to perform anything on stage in front of people. However, I do write rap, so I have some kind of persistence on it. I try writing as clear as I can so that you get the words easily. It doesn’t mater if it’s in English or in Japanese.

---- What do you think is the most interesting thing in the acting field?
T: First, it is so much fun to become a person who is completely different from what I am, and it is interesting to talk and act the way I never do. It’s very informative to get into the characters.

---- Acting and music, are they completely different things?
T: I think it’s the same when trying to express something, but when it comes to music, we can represent it clearly with our heart and body. However, acting represents things with eyes and facial expressions. I find it very interesting working in both field, I hope I can enhance myself.

---- Then, can you tell the fans about yourself?
T: I am such a cheery person in personal life, but not at work. Hope you all find the difference!

---- You came to this entertainment industry after being scouted, right?
N: Yes. They talked to me when I was hanging out with my friends, but I had no interest. I didn’t want to do it. I kept on saying “No.” but one day, they called me, asking to come to a café, they asked me to dance in front of a camera, all of a sudden! LOL

---- Wow, that was very forceful.
N: However, I changed my mind after meeting them and having a talk. I now cannot imagine myself without being a member of 2PM.

---- This job really suits you as a result.
N: I don’t exactly know if it suits me, but I get so excited when I am on stage, as if I become someone else. I enjoy it from the bottom of my heart.

---- What kind of person you are usually?
N: I am always worried. I am over cautious because I need to be perfect all the time. I think I need to relax a little bit. Members often call me “Grandpa” LOL

---- Are you like an old man?
N: Yeah, I usually try to tidy things up around, and I warn members to be quiet when they are noisy. I nag a lot. LOL I might have an old sense although I’m young. Even though I am curious about everything more than any other person…

---- What do you want to do in Japan?
N: I’d love to walk around in Shibuya and Shinjuku more, and learn about Japan more.

How Do Idol Group Members Get Paid?, Nichkhun, 2PM

With the plethora of idol groups out there on the scene, one can't help but wonder: how much money do these "kids" make? Sure they gain popularity through their respective groups, but it's a known fact that each and every member isn't given the same amount of attention and gigs. And let's say we focus on just one group member. Do they get to keep the money that they themselves worked for? Or do they have to split it among their other group members?

Let's use Nickhun of 2PM as an example. He shoots an ice cream commercial here in Korea, followed by a beverage commercial shoot over in Thailand. Then he returns to Korea and does some appearances on variety shows, only to then star in a TV drama. Out of all those jobs, what will Nickhun be able to keep as pay? Well, the ice cream commercial in Korea will be equally divided among the five other 2PM members. However, Nickhun will be able to keep all of the pay from the Thailand commercial shoot. Variety program appearances also get divvied up among the others, though the drama pay will be pocketed by Nickhun entirely. This is according to the initial contracted agreement among the six members and JYP Entertainment. Nickhun must split everything with the exception of drama roles and jobs in his homeland, Thailand. Six members may seem like a lot, but what about some of the other idol groups out there with 9 members? 10? 13? The matter of pay presents a very complicated situation.

JYP along with CUBE Entertainment follow the equal pay distribution system. The explanation from a JYP official: "If a member gets some individual work, it's because he's ultimately a member of the respective idol group." Therefore, the pay should be equally divided among the people who make the group possible; all of the people. These days, Lee Gi-gwang of BEAST and Hyuna of 4minute get more solo gigs than their other members, yet their pay is still shared among all of them.

However, there are more entertainment agencies that follow another system. The system of taking home what you yourself earned. For example, SM Entertainment, which is known to multi-task its entertainers. Some of its popular groups feature one or two members that are more popular than the rest. Prime examples being Yoona or Taeyeon of Girls Generation or Kim Hee-chul or Lee-teuk of Super Junior. One entertainment official even divulged, "Because the difference in pay between the highest paid Super Junior member and the lowest paid Super Junior member is so big, their vibe [together] is a bit weird."

In the case of Pledis Entertainment, the name behind After School which features UEE and Park Gahi or Core Contents Media which backs T-ara, the group boasting Eun-jung and Ji-yeon, each member also keeps what they earn. However, whenever the stars feature on variety programs, Core Contents Media gets to keep the entire pay. The company sees this as justified because appearances on variety programs are to promote the group's album anyway. Also, the pay per episode isn't even that much so it's not like the girls are taking that big of a hit.

So which way is the "better" system? One entertainment insider explained, "Whether you do it this way or that way, there's bound to be complaints. In the case of splitting the pay, members with more active schedules have the most complaints. As for systems where each member gets to keep their own pay, the less popular members [with less work] has the most complaints. There's a reason behind the fact that idol groups form easily and break up easily."

On the first day of April, I drove on the highways for two hours and a half to find myself at Junju. When I sat on the bench in front of Jundong Church, which was sparse of people as it was a weekday, and basked in the sun with nothing to do but wait for a phone call, everything felt unbelievable. Even Palm Springs' desert's dry weather, the harsh cold of last winter felt like something that happened just a few days ago. Jaebum, who I had filmed together with already a half year ago, had zoomed back and forth between Korea and America to prepare for his first mini album during that time, and was now in the midst of ongoing busy days before the presentation of the finished product. At that, he could also not promise coming back up to Seoul as he had to stay all the time at Junju with the filming of movie . I had sprinted down to Junju with haste to meet him. Jaebum appeared just as I hurriedly found an okay restaurant nearby upon hearing he hadn't had the chance to eat lunch yet. That day was rather warm, reasonably enough for one to take his shirt off, yet he was, of course, in a white t-shirt. We, whom had last met at the west part of United States, had again met at the south city of Korea.

VOGUE GIRL (V.G. from now on): Did you not have the chance to eat lunch yet? It's already after 3PM.
Jaebum: I woke up late because the filming ended around sunrise. And around where is this place in Junju? (V.G.: We're nearby Han-Ok village. It's a popular tourist location, but it seems that you didn't have quite enough time to look around yet?) Maybe because the filming site is apart from the town, around that area is very empty. At 9PM, no one's there.... So it's kind of boring. This movie has a way too long waiting time, and because it's not Seoul I don't have really have a place to go or people to meet. And because the four male actors use the same waiting room, I can't dance and it's not an environment to do any music producing. It feels like I'm getting punished. (Laugh)

V.G.: Then you probably haven't had the chance to eat bibimbap or have bean sprout soup with rice?
Jaebum: Yes, not yet. (V.G.: If I had known that, we should have gone to a good bibimbap place.) It's okay. The galbi stew looks good? I like meat, especially, too.

V.G.: It's been half a year since we filmed in Palm Springs.
Jaebum: Already? I thought it hadn't been a while because my memory of it was that it had warm weather. There has been a lot of things happening since then. I went to fan meetings in various countries, and had movie and music video filmings. (V.G.: And the number of your tattoos increased as well. Did you already have an idea that you wanted to do it around this time?) Yes. I can't do it on impulse because it's going to last for all my life. I think of the place and content carefully. Because the tattooist who does the tattoos on me is also busy, I can't do it right away if I want to.

V.G.: A while ago, you stood on Ne-Yo's Korean concert opening stage. How was it seeing him in person?
Jaebum: I met him before the concert and talked with him after as well, and he's a really cool person. The politeness only 'the best' can have has absorbed into his body. The foreign artists I met so far were not like that themselves, but the staff were more overreacting about it and protected them. But Ne-Yo's staff were really nice too. I wanted to say that I wanted to work with him sometime, but I was quiet about it because I didn't know what Ne-Yo's reaction would be. But the staff encouraged me saying that Ne-Yo would like it too, so I worked up the courage and talked to him, and he actually liked it. After that, I exchanged emails with him, and am talking to him through Twitter too. This time, I learned and felt a lot from his stage manners as well as daily attitude.

V.G.: The coming April 25th is your 25th birthday. As well as the date you're going to be releasing your first mini album.
Jaebum: It might be delayed a bit. It seems that the comeback broadcast will be held back about a week. But because my head is full of album thoughts right now, I actually don't have many ideas about how to spend my birthday. Because it's a finished album that I worked on for six months from start to end almost all by myself, it's a very special album to me.

V.G.: What did you want to show the most while preparing your album?
Jaebum: I don't have anything like that. I think it might have been possible because I made it myself. If I did it under someone else's direction, I would have started everything with a concept like masculine, sexy, cute, or something.

V.G.: Did you do all the songwriting, and composing by yourself?
Jaebum: Yes. The form was that if I had a good beat pop up in my head, I finish the melody, stick fitting lyrics onto it and if it's okay, I would record it. (V.G.: Are most of your lyrics coming from personal experience?) I write it while thinking of a scene that fits the melody. Of course, I have experience as well, but including the original 'Bestie' I had, there are seven songs being put on the album and they're all in different styles.
(V.G.: In the last interview, you said that you wanted to do rap, dance, ballad, all of them, and so your wish came true?) Yes. Then, it was just wishful thinking, but now I'm happy because it came true.

V.G.: The phrase 'If you're alcohol I'm an alcoholic' that was possible before because of your slightly awkward Korean was memorable, is there a part like that in your album as well?
Jaebum: Well, I think there are a lot but I don't know what parts are funny. In my view, I'm writing them all seriously.

V.G.: You haven't ever learned songwriting or composing properly, right?
Jaebum: Not at all. But instead of clumsily doing music studying, I think it's better to just not do it at all and just do it in your feel. That's more fun. There are a lot of good professionals that can back up parts I can't do, so if I need them, I can work with them. I don't try to do anything better than them, and I just do the parts I can do well while enjoying it, and get advice on the parts where I need it.

V.G.: Your musical taste must be a bit different from other Korean artists around your age. I don't think it'll be that easy to harmonize well your wants and the Korean public's wants.......
Jaebum: That's why I made the two title tracks more appealing to the public, and two songs hip-hop, and two songs in R&B style. I put both what the public likes and what I like. If I go along to the public trend too much, it doesn't seem like I did it, right? The perfect thing would be making what I like in the public taste, but that's not as easy as it sounds. But in the end, everything was made very well. It's a relief to see everything roll along like expected.

V.G.: This album is like, proof then. Something to prove Park Jaebum.
Jaebum: Ah, prove! That's a good word. Yes. Because it's something with all my talent and style in it. In a phrase, 'this is Park Jaebum'.

V.G.: Now that the producing is all finished, don't you have any parts you regret?
Jaebum: Other singers usually receive the song first, practice for about two weeks and then record, right? But I didn't have time to practice because I had to record it as soon as the song was finished. I couldn't wait to see how the song in my head would materialize in real life. Next time, I'm going to record after doing sufficient training. Originally, I could sing better, but that's kind of regretful. (V.G.: So all of your songs are finished products that were recorded in the very beginning?) Yes. Except for my title song, 'Abandoned'. I just recorded that one again to change up the melody at the middle. (V.G.: Isn't that a very risky attempt? If you were a perfectionist, you couldn't have ever done that.) Rather than doing music perfectly, I want to do it while enjoying it. And I think I was better while I was enjoying it. Even when I'm dancing, rather than doing it to the set routine I feel better when I do it freestyle and feel like I have no regrets.

V.G.: You worked with your AOM friends again this time, don't you have any thoughts to try working with not your friends, but with a star producer or a famous musician?
Jaebum: The thing about me hoping for this album to have a good reaction is, if it succeeds it's purely a combined effort between me and my friends. I want to show people that we had this much talent in us. And rather than working with a famous producer, I want us to become one in the future. I want to make ChaCha like that, as well as having The Quiett hyung become more famous as well. To the point where other people would want to work with us. Of course, I'm dreaming of working with great artists like Ne-Yo, but for now, I think it won't be too late after doing things I want to do with the people I want to work with.

V.G.: The start of your new album activities is through a broadcasting music program. In the end, you've wound around various roads to come to stand on that stage.
Jaebum: I'm happy because I think my fans will like it. They always asked, "When will you appear on the airwaves?" Because I stood on concert stages a lot during that time, I just think that broadcasts are just an extension of the stage I always stood on. (V.G. The broadcasting company must be also a long time, no see thing. You'll also see people you haven't got to see for a while.) It'd probably be like that. But I've also seen the people I wanted to see outside of the broadcasting company as well.

V.G.: When you get stressed, how do you work it out?
Jaebum: My personality isn't one to get stressed out much. It's up to the point where I can't even remember properly when my mood was completely down, or when I was really angry. These days, I think I'm just enjoying life, living well. Playing with close friends and hyungs every day. (V.G.: You don't meet new people much?) I think it's troublesome, the more people there are in a meeting. It's more fun when just a few people I know get together in a 'small group' and have fun.

V.G.: Maybe because you have fun with your hyungs too much. You haven't had many scandals either.
Jaebum: Scandals? I've had a lot of scandals. Oh, with a girl? Haha. There hasn't been much time to do that. Later, if I get a girlfriend, and if I'm 'unlucky', maybe there'll be a scandal. As of the moment, I don't think there'll be a big meaning even if I had a girlfriend because I'm so busy. Later, when I achieve peace of mind, I'll have to get a girlfriend. I don't think I'll reveal it. Well, we'll just have to see.

V.G.: Before, when we interviewed before, I remember you saying that you played like high-school teens with 'When I have fun with friends, we just dance, go to a friend's house and order pizza'. Do you know how to drink?
Jaebum: Of course. I just don't drink much or drink that often. (V.G. What kind of drink suits your taste best?) Not any of them, really. All of them taste bad.

V.G.: Then aside from producing music or dancing, what do you do when you have spare time?
Jaebum: Bowling? These days, since I go often to bowling alleys when I have spare time, my bowling skills have improved. The score's around 110? Shopping, I haven't done it for over two years. Since my fans send me everything from suits to underwear, it's enough just wearing those.

V.G.: You're just 25, your answers and attitude seem too mature in contrast to your age.
Jaebum: There are a lot of people who are worried for me. I think they think that I've suffered too much in contrast to my age. But the reason I matured lies more in that I lived seperated from my family in Korea since age 18, rather than those things that happened. I had to take responsibility for myself earlier than others. That's why my responsibility for my family is stronger than most. I think a good man is a person who can take care of people near him and take responsibility. From the people near me, I think Janghyuk hyung is a person like that. He's a good man and a good actor.

V.G.: What do you see yourself as when you're 30?
Jaebum: I don't know at all. 5 years isn't a really short time. At 20, I didn't anticipate that I would live a life like I do now at age 25. There's already a lot of things to think about, and it gives me a headache to think about the far future as well. But I think that as I grow older, I need to exercise hard as well. I have the feeling that my stamina fell a little bit these days. Before, I always exercised even if it meant going in at early morning, but now I just fall asleep right away (laugh).

V.G.: Now that I think about it, I remember you saying 'I don't really set goals'.
Jaebum: Yes. I think it's the best to 'let things flow'. Just try your best, while having fun, I don't think any deeper than that. But I am thinking of plans for the immediate future. Next year, I'm thinking of taking a shot at the American stage. In America, I have a company as well, and there are a decent amount of songs I already have and worked with many producers with. So after finishing activities for this album, I think I'll be going back and forth to and from America a lot. But this year, I'm going to focus on Korean activities. I want to fulfill the hopes of my fans that were thirsty for Korean activities. After showing a sufficient amount of my music style to Korean fans, I want to take an attempt at American activities.

V.G.: I think you'll have a big advantage because you don't have handicaps most Korean singers have. First, you have no trouble with communicating.
Jaebum: Mm, I have confidence in many aspects. Maybe because I grew up listening to American music, I'm more used to the 'American' style. I think I'll be able to make many varying, new tries in contrast to Korea.

V.G.: So in the end, isn't it your dream to go into the American stages? Thinking of it as having approached that dream faster, it could be that previous events are evils-turned-blessings.
Jaebum: It could be that. But that's not really important. I just want to go on stages that musicians I respect have stood on as fast as I can, and I just want to work with them. More than anything, I also want to show that Korean musicians can succeed in the American market. (V.G.: Around what level would you call it 'success'?) At around the same level as Usher or Ne-Yo? (V.G.: Wow, that's very successful?) Yes. It should be like that. I'm looking far. Because it's not an easy thing.

V.G.: From the songs listed on your album, which do you think people will like most?
Jaebum: I'm actually very curious about that (At this point, his rate of speech suddenly increased). I think about it every day. What song will have the best reaction. But when I was working on the songs, there's that thing that I'm doing the songs because I like them, but I'm also worrying a lot about how fans will think. Sometimes I imagine it. This song, I think they'll call masculine, this song, they'd probably call it sexy, I hope they'll call these lyrics cute, this kind of thing. I want fans to know that they're another contender in this album. Because I have to have fans to make music.

V.G.: I heard you already wrote 8 songs to be listed on your next album?
Jaebum: In this year, I'm going to release another 2nd mini album. Also, keep releasing singles in the middle as well. (V.G.: That's rather different from the standard way other musicians do it. Because that's way different from how they hold their comeback, rest, and then hold their comeback again.) Well, these days, when you release official albums, people don't really listen to other songs apart from your title. But because I'm so attached to each and every one of these songs, if they do that, I think I'll be really sad. And there's already so many songs I've worked on. What'll they do, just sitting there. I want to show everyone each song, one by one.

During the whole interview, Jaebum answered questions right away, before 3 seconds had passed. Even talking about that 'apology' that happened a while ago, he'd answered right off the bat, "Because it's an apology I did, of course it's my thinking and my decision", then ate well-cooked rib meat and finished a bowl of rice. After drinking all the sikhye that came out for dessert without leaving a single drop, and around the time that the interview was going to be finished, he said after realizing that there was still one hour left to go back to the filming site, "Let's go bowling." In the car that was driving to the random nearby bowling alley that was punched into the navigation device, he said, "Do you want to listen to my title song?" To hear a song that hadn't been revealed to the world yet while feeling the spring sun, my heart beat faster, and after hearing it I somehow became emotional. A feeling, like everything was going to turn out nicely? I then became curious about how he would dance to this song on the first stage that would be held after a couple of weeks, and what expression he would wear while looking at the camera. "Look at me then. I won't disappoint you." In the end, because the traffic was bad and we spent all the time going to the bowling, I never got to see a ball-rolling Jaebum, but what about if I couldn't see him right now? Because of this, we would be able to bowl again soon, and we had promised to film another 'okay' pictorial later. Even if we don't know if it'll be in Korea, the States, or some other place yet.

In the midst of Korean artistes expanding into Japan one after another, our next guest is 2PM, who swept up the No. 1 spots in their home country.
They've already become a hot topic through TV and other media, but what kind of group are they!?
We shall dig deep for the answer through this series of interviews until their Japan debut in May!!
For the first round, let's begin with a group interview and self-introductions.

Incidents that occurred at their first live performance in Japan
Baffled by the difference between Japan and Korea!?

--I watched your live performance at Ryogoku Kokugikan on 8 December last year. It was very powerful, and I was shocked by how you became one with the audience. What did you think of your first performance in Japan?
TAEC: It was fun, of course, but the members were quite nervous. There was a point when Junsu's leg actually started to hurt midway, so he couldn't move backstage.
JUNSU: What, do we have to talk about that? (wry smile)
TAEC: We covered for him on stage, so we managed to overcome that problem, but then Chansung's teeth started hurting. (laughs) Quite a few unexpected things happened.

--How was the Japanese audience?
JUNHO: Although it was our first performance in Japan, everyone brought the same penlights and waved them around. I was really touched that they unified to show their support for us.

--They all moved in sync too.
WOO: I was surprised, too.

--Including the live performance, are there any differences between Korean and Japanese fans?
CHAN: In Korea, fans would freely raise their voices, like screaming "Kya-" when the intro of their favourite song plays, or yelling the name of their favourite member when it's his turn to sing.
TAEC: With the Japanese audience, it felt like they were warmly watching over us. Like they're listening carefully, ears pricked and wondering, "What song will they sing next?" I thought it might be because, for many of them, it was the first time watching our performance live.

--After your debut in Japan was confirmed, what kind of preparations have you been making?
WOO: After our debut was confirmed, we immediately started studying Japanese in order to master the language as quickly as possible. Also, we figured it would be a good idea to learn about the culture too, so we're watching a lot of Japanese dramas.
TAEC: We've always appealed to people with our masculinity and manliness in Korea, but I think we'll show a completely different side of us in Japan.

--What, specifically, do you want to show us?
TAEC: In addition to our strong and powerful image on stage, we'd like to add a sense of closeness and familiarity to it. So that boys will watch our performances and think, "I want to be like them."

--But for your Ryogoku Kokugikan performance, you looked like superheroes who appeared at the end of the world, like a strong presence that came to rescue all the unhappy women in a devastated world.
ALL: (excitedly) Ohhh-! Thank you very much. (laughs)
KHUN: What extravagant praise!

Passion and energy describe 2PM
From now on they'll be dainty, sensitive beasts!?

--In Japan, it's said that the number of quiet, kind and somewhat gender-neutral "Soshokukei Danshi" (dainty, sensitive boys) are increasing. I wonder if that will cause a backlash and make a tough presence like yours unnecessary?
ALL: Hmmm.

--Manly physique aside, do you also have masculine thoughts, such as the wish to protect women?
ALL: (strongly) Of course!

--On the other hand, you also have the charming contrast of being shy and innocent when you speak, right?
KHUN: Thank you very much!
WOO: We're glad to hear you say that.

--Are you, perhaps, trying for that contrast instead? (laughs)
TAEC: Not at all! (laughs) Because it's very difficult to do that consciously.
KHUN: When we stand on stage, all of us are extremely focused, and giving a performance that matches the song is a basic stage requirement, so we'll always aim for a strong, powerful image, no matter what. But normally, our natural state is just like this.

--In that case, how would you describe 2PM?
JUNSU: First, passion. It'd be great if people could watch our energetic performances and have fun with us.
TAEC: I'd be most pleased if we can convey our energy to people.

--Just now, you said that you wanted to attract people with a sense of closeness and familiarity, but does that mean that in Japan, you will change the way you express yourselves in Korea?
TAEC: That won't happen. We are who we are.
JUNHO: Ah, Chansung says he has something. (laughs)
CHAN: Huh? (bewildered) Me? With regards to expression, I think it'll ultimately depend on the song. The image we want to show will differ according to the song. It's not that we're changing our Korean image; rather, we're doing a song that's different from the image we had before.

--Do you discuss what direction to take next amongst the 6 members?
WOO: The first important thing is to find out what our Japanese fans want. For example, we'd use the nicknames created by fans who've taken a liking to us. Right now, we want to listen to the opinions of people around us.

From a sexy role to the role of a fool
2PM's individual characters are also part of their charm

--Could each of you please tell us what you're good at musically and on stage?
KHUN: It's instruments for me. I like singing while playing the guitar. I want to show a different side of myself for my solo performance.
TAEC: I'm in charge of the rap, so I'm good at that. When I perform solo, I also play the piano, but I'm not very good at it. I want to become a little better, so I'll work hard. (laughs)
JUNSU: I do the vocals, so of course, I like songs. I've also done rap, as well as write and remix songs, so I hope people will watch these solo activities, too.
WOO: For me, it's not that I'm good at dancing, but more like I enjoy it. That's all. (laughs)
ALL: (laughs)
WOO: Ah, but I practised break dancing super hard, so I think I've gotten pretty good.
JUNHO: Acrobatic dance. I've always liked sports, so I practised really tough dances. There was a period when Taecyeon and Chansung gradually grew bigger and more toned by eating and exercising, while I threw myself into dance practices. I'll practise more, so I can perform fine, sharp acrobatics for everyone in Japan.
CHAN: Umm, for me, it's my concert performances.
JUNSU: He plays the sexy role. (laughs)
CHAN: (laughs) I also play the role of a fool in Taecyeon's place when he's absent.
JUNSU: Chansung's the youngest, so he's shy.

--Are there any stories of the 6 of you coming together to overcome something?
JUNSU: Stories! We'll never finish talking about those no matter how much time we've got!

--Then how about the times you supported each other when someone felt lonely in the dormitories?
WOO: Ahh, everyone would gather together to talk about various things during those times.

--I think all of you are on great terms, but what would happen if 6 of you get into a fight? Who do you think will win?
TAEC: The person who wants to win most will probably win. The person who strongly wishes for victory at that moment.
WOO: I think we're all strong in our own way.
JUNSU: But I don't want to imagine us fighting. (wry smile)

--Then who will win a verbal argument?
JUNHO: Basically, we've never quarreled before, because we believe a compromise can be reached as long as we talk about it. If there's something we have in mind, we'll make sure to speak up and convey it, so we've never had a fight before.
KHUN:The toughest period we had to go through since becoming 2PM was at the end of last year. For 3 weeks straight, we had recordings, shootings, and we could only sleep for 2 hours a day. Taecyeon and Wooyoung also appeared in a drama at the time.
WOO: That's right. We had to memorize lines too, so that was tough. (wry smile)
TAEC: But we overcame that period and things wound down. Then a busy period hit again - that's the cycle we go through.
CHAN: In any case, the toughest day was 2 years ago, on 31 December. The day we had to record the song "Tiktok" after the MBC programme ended, I think? I remember being really busy.
JUNHO: I intended to sleep in the studio basement, but somehow ended up in the dorms when I woke up. I don't even remember how I moved. (laughs)
JUNSU: Yeah, now that you mention it! (laughs uproariously)
CHAN: It felt like we really helped each other to overcome that period. And I remember being really happy when that song got no. 1 in the Korean rankings.
